Darby Spicer (Candle) So much emotion packed into so few tracks. I wish this album could keep going on & on… but then, I guess there's always the repeat button!

about

On this album, a series of improvised acoustic guitar recordings are utilized that are later cut up and re-assembled into compositions that serve as a canvas for the overlaid melodies that were influenced from this collaged structure. Half of the songs are of this nature while the other half are constructed compositions with thought out melodies and loops. The two worlds of improvisation and orchestration are celebrated here in one meandering flow. The guitar serves as the heart of the album intermingled with field recordings, software synths, guitar loops. Released on Day of the Dead (November 2nd) as an offering to the Deceased.

Praise for the album:

"This album is a damn fine cup of coffee. I’m referencing Twin Peaks here because this album can easily be a soundtrack to a David Lynch flick or perhaps a David Cronenberg film. If you’re a fan of these types of films, then I think you can gather the sound I’m trying to describe here; dark, soothing, ambient and with a sense of doom throughout that I just couldn’t peel my ears away from."

"For his first LP, Hellenica continues his tour of ghost towns, walking between abandoned buildings in which some threatening presence might await. If it’s comfort you want, you should go somewhere else. We can still hear the influence of spaghetti western scores (think Ennio Morricone) with their fair share of worrisome tension, like any person we might encounter would be more likely to be an enemy than a friend. Hellenica expertly mixes genres and shapes them into a cohesive whole. One moment you believe you’re in an old western and the next software synths come in, leading you to think you might be in some dystopic future devoid of human activity instead, but where computers are still running by themselves, the only trace left of our existence. Intensely atmospheric, Blood Moon Wolf Head perfectly evokes this mysterious land where past and future overlap."

- Sylvain Verstricht - Local Gestures

With a sound as big as the canyons, and all the weary heartache of a cowboy ready to die in the dunes, Hellenica picks its way through songs of far-off horizons and scattered, sun-bleached bones, ambling towards an end that he's more than ready to meet...
The fully instrumental approach makes the music seem more like the score to an unmade film, with themes that are developed carefully....
